The Pros and Cons of Interior Sliding Doors

The Pros and Cons of Interior Sliding Doors

Long associated with small spaces, sliding doors, either installed along the wall or recessed (pocket doors), are now commonly found in modern homes and condos.

Whether for a bedroom, a bathroom, or an office, they offer an interesting alternative to traditional doors.

But are they really the right choice for your property? Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you make an informed decision.

A Game-Changing Space Saver

The main advantage of sliding doors is that they save space.

Unlike a hinged door, a sliding door requires no clearance to open it. With no handle, it can literally disappear into the wall or at least run flush against it without taking up any space. This can make a real difference in certain rooms.

In practical terms, this allows you to place a piece of furniture near the doorway and improve how people move through the room.

A non-negligible benefit in a house or condo where every square foot counts!

A Modern, Minimalist Aesthetic

Beyond its practical advantages, the sliding door produces a very striking visual effect. It creates

  • cleaner lines;
  • a spacious feel;
  • a sense of continuity between rooms (for example, you can apply the same wallpaper on both the wall and door, giving the illusion of a seamless wall when the door is closed).

It’s particularly well suited to minimalist decors, contemporary interiors, and open-plan layouts.

A sliding door is usually chosen as much for its style as for its practicality.

The Tangible Everyday Benefits

The following examples are just some of the situations in which this type of door is simply the obvious choice.

  • In a small bathroom, it minimizes conflicts between users by freeing up space.
  • In a bedroom, it can optimize the layout.
  • In an office, it can serve as a subtle partition.
  • In a walk-in closet that opens onto a bathroom, it helps to reduce the number of awkward doors.
  • In an open-plan room that you want to partition off without making it dark and gloomy, an oversized pocket door is an excellent idea: the large opening will let in plenty of light.

Drawbacks not to Be Ignored

Despite its many advantages, the sliding door also has certain downsides that must be considered.

First, insulation:

Contrary to a conventional door, a sliding door doesn’t generally provide as much air or sound insulation. This may be a factor to bear in mind in a bedroom or bathroom.

Second, no access:

The mechanism is concealed inside the wall, which makes certain repairs more difficult. If a problem arises, it may be necessary to open up the wall!

Third, a more complex installation:

Installing a sliding pocket door into an existing wall can be challenging, particularly in the case of a load-bearing wall or a wall that contains plumbing or electrical wiring, for example.

Finally, the cost:

It’s more expensive than a standard door, and pocket doors are even pricier.

How Are Sliding Doors Installed?

Installing a wall-mounted sliding door isn’t that difficult; the process for a pocket model, however, is more complicated.

An opening must be created in the wall to accommodate the sliding panel. This usually involves affixing a metal or wooden frame, designed to house the door and its track.

In broad terms, the steps are:

  • Open the existing wall.
  • Install the structure (sliding system).
  • Install the track.
  • Close the wall (gypsum board, finishing).

Builders can plan for this relatively easily during new house construction. But it’s a much more involved task when part of a renovation project, especially if the wall contains technical components (wiring, pipes, insulation), as explained above.

Professional installation is generally recommended to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Which Type of Door Should You Choose?

There are now several models available, depending on the style you’re looking for and your budget.

For example:

  • Solid wood or MDF doors, very classic, which blend in with the decor.
  • Full or partial glass doors that let light in.
  • Stylish designs with textured panels that add a touch of flair.
  • Double door versions for wider openings that are truly stunning.

When done right, a sliding door can certainly transform a room!
